Beatrice marks 102nd milestone with bubbly
Beatrice Garrad-Cole celebrated her 102nd birthday in Alexandra Care Home, Hemel Hempstead. With her are her grandson Tom Gerrad-Cole and son Geoff Gerrad-Cole.
Smiling Beatrice Gerrad-Cole celebrated her 102nd birthday with a slice of cake and a glass of bubbly.
She was joined by son Geoff, 68, and grandson Tom, 37, to mark the milestone, along with other family and friends.
Geoff is not too sure what his mother’s secret to a long life is but said: “She grew up in an age when people were a lot more active and probably, in spite of the war, ate a lot more healthy food.
“She also rode her bicycle until she was well into her forties.”
Beatrice lived in Redbourn where she was a keen Mothers’ Union member before moving into Hemel Hempstead’s Alexandra Care Home in 2009.
Originally from Bushey Heath, she worked as a secretary to the chief buyer at upmarket London department store Selfridges, where she was also captain of the staff hockey team.
She married Audley in 1936 and joined the Women’s Royal Air Force two years later, rising to rank of wing officer, before leaving to have Geoff in 1944.
