Last Sunday didn’t bring with it the best beach weather, but it didn’t stop the Friends of Tring Church Heritage bringing a taste of the seaside to the grounds of St Peter and St Paul’s Church.

Kings of the barbecue were Rev Huw Bellis and Mike Watkin and the authentic reggae beat was provided by Barry Child and his team, while families enjoyed a treasure hunt and Caribbean-style egg and spoon race.

More than 60 brave souls faced the chilly wind in Caribbean outfits and close to £500 was raised for the church’s wall works appeal.

The Wall Works Challenge started in September 2012 and is designed to maintain the centuries-old structure of the iconic church, thereby preserving its history and preventing a costly disaster in future.

The total cost of the project is upwards of £50,000 .

The Friends’ honorary president Grahame Senior said: “Despite the weather, the event was voted a blast and there is no doubt the cooking was smokin’.’’

A family fun day will also be held in the churchyard on Saturday, May 10, featuring the annual ‘Teddies’ Tower of Terror’.

For more information call Helen Dunford on 01442 891377 or Grahame on 01442 822770.
