A woman who saved her elderly neighbour from a flat blaze after hearing her smoke alarm sounding has been presented with an award for outstanding bravery.

Loren Goldenberg-Kosbab, of White Hart Drive, kicked in her 71-year-old neighbour’s door and led her to safety.

The Dacorum Community Safety Partnership – made up of council, police and fire representatives – recognised her efforts with a special presentation at Hemel Hempstead Fire Station on Friday.

Fire district commander for the area Ian Markwell told guests: “Without Loren’s rapid actions at that particular time I don’t think we would have been dealing with such a happy ending to this story.”

The fire victim was taken to hospital by ambulance and Loren was checked over by paramedics at the scene on the evening of Thursday, January 24.

It is believed that the blaze, which gutted the living room, was started by a candle.

Loren, 44, who had only moved into her flat just six weeks before the fire, said: “I am honoured to receive this, it is not every day we get recognised for doing something. I would like to thank White Watch who came so very quickly and I would like to thank Dacorum Borough Council as well because if they didn’t have smoke detectors fitted as standard I wouldn’t have known that there was something going on in the flat next door to me.

“Where I got the energy and power from I don’t know, it is just instinct and when you are in that moment you don’t think about anything except saving a life.

“I am actually privileged to have been there to help her because she is alive today.”

Firefighters want to drive home the message to householders that they should ensure they have a working smoke alarm fitted.
