Campaigner for the deaf Asif Iqbal has been named a regional winner in a competition celebrating the accomplishments of those with hearing problems.

Asif, a deaf father-of-three from Hemel Hempstead, now has the chance to go forward to the national finals of the Sound Barrier Star Awards on August 21.

The 36-year-old was awarded an MBE last year for services to deaf and disabled people and he is an ambassador for Deaf Parenting UK.

He said: ‘I was absolutely stunned when I found out I was named as a regional finalist – I had no idea.

‘When growing up, I faced so many challenges to get where I am and worked so hard. By having this recognition, I hope this will serve as an inspiration to all communities – especially those within black and minority ethnic groups, young people and under-represented communities. That if I can do it, they can do it too.”

The competition is being run by Specsavers hearing centres in association with Hearing Dogs For Deaf People.
