Arthur Smith Tring gig raises more than £2,000 for sick children

Funny men Arthur Smith, Tom Craine and Simon Evans attracted a full house at The Court Theatre, in Tring, on Friday, March 20.

The Get Stuffed Comedy gig compered by Grumpy Old Men's Arthur Smith raised more than 2,000 for The Sick Children's Trust and was a fantastic night for all involved.

Organiser Ben Moorhouse said that the venue was at full capacity with 250 people.

He has set up the next gig on Friday, May 8, with Robin Ince, at 8pm, and Little Howard at 4pm, in Desbourgh Hall, Tring, because it can take double the amount of people.

At 65 years old Arthur Smith is still very much in demand. The pioneer of alternative comedy has a BBC Radio 4 show and stars in television's Grumpy Old Men series.

Back stage at The Court Theatre gig, drinking a cuppa, he said that he still loves going out to live gigs.

"For me it's like going down the pub for the evening, which I don't do anymore - this is my form of doing it," he said.

He introduced Tom Craine and Simon Evans to the stage that night.

Tom Craine failed his driving test five times for such major mistakes as jumping red lights, nearly running into an ice cream truck and de-misting his car in an inappropriate manner. So he was lucky to be able to drive to the venue.

Tom, from Cardiff, was up first. He has a naturally quirky sense of humour that went down very well with the Tring audience.

He was followed by Simon Evans, after the interval, who created a persona of an arrogant 'educated' man, which got plenty of laughs.
