Art show to be held in Sheila’s memory

Sheila Jackman, artist known as Sheila Jessop, has died aged 83 years.

Sheila Jackman, artist known as Sheila Jessop, has died aged 83 years.

An artist who arrived in Hemel Hempstead aboard her narrow boat before setting up home in Boxmoor has passed away.

Sheila Jackman, 83, also known as Sheila Jessop, died peacefully while looking at her garden, which she loved, on a sunny morning on Saturday, October 6.

She exhibited her paintings and sculptures in local and regional exhibitions for more than 50 years and, after coming to Hemel Hempstead with her husband Richard, worked in the card design department at the town’s famous paper-making company Dickinsons.

She contributed to the re-design of the pavement in Bank Court and, until a few years ago, organised displays of paintings in the restaurant at Hemel Hempstead Hospital.

Sheila also played an active part in the life of the town, with enthusiasm for many local issues and environmental campaigns and was a member of the Hemel Art Group.

Sheila and Richard built a home on a new town plot in Boxmoor in 1959, where they brought up their three daughters – Dorothy Jackman, Harriet Jackman and Charlotte Jackman-Allain.

In the 1970s, Sheila studied landscape architecture, working on garden schemes, and continuing to paint and sculpt while bringing up her family.

The couple worked together on art and craft projects, as Richard made and sold wooden furniture and toys during the 1980s until his death in 1989.

Landscape and the natural world were Sheila’s particular interest, and she and Richard bought a small plot of land at Frithsden in 1970, where over the years they planted thousands of trees, which have now formed a wood .

Sheila exhibited her paintings and sculptures regularly around Herts, Essex and London. Her life will be commemorated in an exhibition of her work at the Peter Ingram Gallery at Frogmore Mill in Apsley from February 17 to 23, next year.
