2012 party spend goes over budget by £22,000
Olympic Torch comes to Hemel Hempstead
The borough’s bill for celebrating the Jubilee and the Olympics has come in at more than £20,000 over budget.
Council bosses set aside £160,000 to mark the events but unforeseen ‘additional costs’ have pushed up the price tag to £182,000.
Councillor Neil Harden, cabinet chief for community services at Dacorum Borough Council, said hosting the paralympic torch, additional security requirements and last-minute changes due to weather pushed up the cost.
“I personally am not that concerned by it,” he said. “It’s a slight overspend but it’s due to three successful events.”
To celebrate the Diamond Jubilee Dacorum Borough Council laid on a parade of floats through Hemel Hempstead town centre, a fair in Gadebridge Park and a massive screen costing £19,000 showing a live stream from Buckingham Palace.
When the Olympic torch came to the town in July a running track was set up outside the Civic Centre along with rides, stalls and a marquee.
A giant screen set up in a field at Camelot Rugby Club to show the Olympics cost £10,000. The Olympic banners that adorned lampposts had to be ordered especially through LOCOG and cost a further £10,000.
Julie Still, who was seconded to the role of 2012 officer, said: “The bottom line is that the celebrations across the borough were bigger and better than anticipated.”
