A piece of wasteland in Tring is on the market for £1.5m –with planning permision for two new luxury homes.
The 15 acre site in Bulbourne Road on the outskirts of Tring has been home to Gamnel Farm since the mid-18th century, but its previous owners moved out in the mid 2000s.
The old house had been standing empty ever since, before being demolished two weeks ago.
The derelict farmhouse and its outbuildings have been a blot on the landscape for years, but that’s now set to change thanks to approved plans for a brand new farmhouse and barn conversion.
Both homes will offer 5,847 and 4,610 square feet of living space respectively – each with paddocks at the rear.
The boarded-up house had suffered several arson attacks in recent years, rendering it uninhabitable – and it’s now been demolished after being labelled unsafe.
Regents Estate Agents of Berkhamsted is dealing with the sale of the land on behalf of the owner, who lives overseas.
Regent partner Tom Leech said: “It’s a beautiful spot.
“We’ve been handling the planning application on behalf of the owner.
“The house has recently been demolished because kids were getting in there and starting fires.
“Even when we locked the gates, they were cutting the lock off and getting in. It was unsafe.”
After so many years of looking out over the crumbling building, many neighbours living close to the site are pleased about the prospect of redevelopment although some miss the bygone days of when it was a working dairy farm.
Jan McGrory, of Orchard House, Bulbourne Road, said: “I remember when I used to go across and get my milk in a jug. That’s about 25 years ago now.”
Mrs McGrory also recalls the times she was invited in to view the opulent interior decorated with intricate tiles – an homage to the owners’ Moroccan heritage which led to the house being dubbed Tring’s House of Mosaics by photographers who have ventured inside to capture the disrepair on film.
Another neighbour said: “It’s been in disrepair for so long, so it’s nice to finally see something happening.
“It was up for sale before as it is, but it’s too near the road, and you wouldn’t want to live there.”
