A TOWN centre pub has been given a makeover to try and attract a more sophisticated clientele – despite having its licence placed under review.

The George in High Street, Berkhamsted, has struggled to shake off a reputation for raucousness.

Mark Wheway, who has been its manager for 15 years, said: “It used to be quite crazy when we had a younger clientele.

“They have now got a bit older. There are councillors, lawyers and doctors who are regulars here.”

But the pub’s licence is up for review by Dacorum Borough Council tomorrow, because environmental officers say the venue breaches noise regulations.
