NEIGHBOURS of the last wharf in Berkhamsted waved goodbye to the 200-year-old property as it was demolished by its owners.

A boatyard has existed on the Bridge Street site since 1799.

Current owners Bridgewater Boats plan to build a new boathouse with a house attached to it and a block of two flats nearby on the site.

More than 200 of the boatyard’s neighbours joined the group Save Our Wharf – but last week, the dilapidated building was torn down.

Jane Keenan, aged 40, who lives opposite the building in Station Road, said: “It’s so sad to see it go.

“But I hope it is a beautiful development that makes the most of the waterfront view.”
