We’ll enjoy G&S until the cows come home!

The curtain goes up on the latest Abbots Langley Gilbert & Sullivan Society show in just a few days, and rehearsals have entered their final phase.

But as opening night on Tuesday, January 22, at Watford’s Palace Theatre draws ever nearer, there has still been time to get out into the fresh air.

That’s because the setting for Patience is not the Victorian England of the authors, but the Home Front in the Second World War.

That means that there’s a dashing Spitfire pilot, a lovely Land Girl – which explains the milking pose – and a chorus made up of the Home Guard.

There are all the familiar G&S ingredients – tongue-twisting patter songs, catchy tunes and cleverly interwoven melodies – in this light-hearted mockery of pretentiousness.

The talented and energetic cast are busy polishing their moves and tweaking their costumes in anticipation of the first performance of this rarely-seen piece.

The title role is played by music graduate Jennifer Carr, in her third principal part since joining the award-winning society in 2008.

Patience runs in support of the Royal British Legion until January 26, with an additional matinée performance on the Saturday.

To book, call the box office on 01923 225671 or go to www.watfordpalacetheatre.co.uk. Tickets start at £10.
