Tributes to lead singer of hit ’60s rock band
THE leader of a 1960s rock band has died aged 72 after a heart attack.
Lifelong Berkhamsted man Keith Andrew had his lucky break into the pop world when his band The Jynx won a competition by Liverpool’s the Cavern Club.
They recorded Top 40 chart hit How? in 1964 and were soon appearing on TV shows including Ready Steady Go and The Five O’Clock Club.
The band split up and Keith then formed City Lights, who toured working men’s clubs in Beds, Herts and Bucks.
Former City Lights guitarist Pete Staniford, 68, from Milton Keynes, said: “He had a terrific stage presence and a powerful voice in the Tom Jones idiom.
“To be quite honest, he started singing and we just followed him.”
Keith retired from the music business in 1977 to look after daughter Karen, now 42.
Karen, who now lives in Leighton Buzzard, said: “In the ’60s, everybody loved to dance and sing and that sort of thing.
“Dad told me he used to love his music and I think he really regretted giving up singing.
“He was a very good singer and would help anybody. He was a lovely man.”
Keith, from Holly Drive, lost his wife Gill, 60, five years ago and the couple only had one child. Keith’s funeral was on Friday.
