It would be a travesty to miss La Traviata
AWARD-winning opera producer Ellen Kent re-launches her quest to bring opera to everyone with a stunning production of La Traviata at the Watford Colosseum next week.
Featuring the internationally acclaimed Ukrainian National Opera of Kharkiv, the tragic tale of searing passion with memorable music is Verdi’s interpretation of one of the most popular love stories of the 19th century – La Dame aux Camelias.
Based on a true story, it tells of the life and love of the passionate but consumptive Violetta with highlights including the Brindisi – the best-known drinking song in the opera, Un Di Felice – the duet, and Addio Del Passato – the haunting aria.
A producer of her own shows for 29 years, Ellen had changed direction to focus on developing her role as an artistic director in larger-scale productions. But she couldn’t resist the lure of the regional tours.
She said: “I think this is my best La Traviata ever – and I’ve done it dozens of times. It’s a very real performance that I think people will identify with and feel moved. My operas have to be emotional and beautiful. Mine isn’t minimalist – it’s traditional opera with a sexy feel.”
International sopranos Maria Tsonina and Elena Dee will be singing the role of Violetta while Andriy Perfilov is Alfredo. They are joined by a 70-strong company including Ruslan Zinevych who sung with the late Pavarotti.
