Tourists could holiday at Walter’s old place

The new owners of the former racing estate that was managed by Walter Swinburn and Peter Harris for more than 20 years are looking into the possibility of offering holiday lets from the property.

If the plans – which are in the very early stages – come to fruition, people will be able to stay in cottages at the famous Church Farm site in Aldbury and enjoy the surroundings where more than 1,000 winning racehorses once trained.

Ross Alberto, of Painsend Farm, a family equestrian and farming partnership which bought the 300-acre estate earlier in the year, said: “It would add to the local prosperity and bring more vibrancy to the place.

“Financially it would make sense because I think holiday homes would let very well.”

Currently the idea is being developed and Mr Alberto is gauging interest by asking people to register on the Church Farm website. He also wants to involve the Aldbury community.

He said: “Once we have more detail we can get architect plans drawn up and talk to the parish council about it to get their input.

“We want to be inclusive with the process because the council may be able to help with suggestions.

“We are not looking for a quick fix to sell it on, we are looking at what would work best in the village long term. It’s a sympathetic project and a very exciting one too.”

The partnership has already made a number of sympathetic changes to the estate.

The apartments and homes, which were used to house the stable hands, are being rented out, while the owner’s reception is being offered for commercial use.

Also the family planted rape seed in the surrounding farmland back in August and hope to also grow wheat in the future.
