Special event puts dignity to the fore

The importance of dignity in care has been recognised by Runwood Homes and is also a focus of the Care Quality Commission this year.

High View Lodge in Gadebridge took part in a National Dignity Day, along with other homes in the Runwood Homes, with the aim of winning hearts and minds, changing the culture and placing a greater emphasis on the quality of care services. The day set out to promote dignity, to identify examples of good practice and to also ensure that information on the subject is available within the home and kept updated.

The day included the creation of a 1940s tea shop in the main suite with cream cakes, scones, fresh creams and jams.

Residents and family members were invited to write down what dignity meant to them on retro lugagge tags, which were later attached to balloons for a balloon release.

All donations for refreshments and balloons went to Age UK.

Activities co-ordinator Amy Dragon has painted a tree inspired by the theme in the main stairwell. Manager Pauline Clarke and her deputy and Tracy Axten are encouraging their staff to become dignity champions – people who, in their own way, are committed to taking some action, however small, in order to create a care system that has compassion and respect for those using its services.
