Police are on a roadshow drive to prevent break-ins
Cops will be hitting the streets to tell people how to beat the burglars ahead of the clocks going back for winter at the end of this month.
Crime figures show that in the autumn and winter months burglary offences increase and this could be down to the earlier nightfall making it more obvious to crooks if no-one is home.
Detective Chief Inspector Tannis Perks said: “We want to help residents to protect their properties with simple crime prevention methods.
“Many of the suggestions are simple and quick, for example, give your home a lived-in look by installing timer switches to lamps and always remember to lock PVCu doors by turning the key as well as lifting the handle.
“Close all your windows when you go out and make sure tools are secured in sheds and garages to avoid them being used by burglars to gain entry to homes. Use strong locks on sheds and garages to protect your garden equipment, bikes and other valuables.”
To help drive home the crime-fighting message, Herts Constabulary will be hosting a number of roadshows across the county on Saturday, with officers in Marlowes, Hemel Hempstead from 11am to 3pm.
Det Chief Insp Perks said: “There is a very clear message for criminals, Hertfordshire has low levels of burglary, in part due to our ability to catch offenders and bring them to justice. We will continue to use all available methods to catch offenders including the latest forensic techniques.”
