Could you give a school a helping hand?

A school that teaches children with learning difficulties has a range of volunteer opportunities.

Woodfield School needs an art and home economics assistant to help keep tidy and organise the art and kitchen rooms. Help is needed from 9am to 1.30pm or 1.30pm to 3.30pm, especially on Thursdays.

> A classroom helper is required to enable groups with special needs to join in with curriculum opportunities such as swimming. Help is needed from 9am to noon or 1.30pm to 3.15pm.

> A green fingered volunteer is needed to tend the school’s Dell garden. It is planted with aromatic herbs and has ramps so that children in wheelchairs can get around. A few hours a week is all that is needed and the helper would carry out general gardening tasks like tidying beds and weeding.

>Bookworms are needed at the school to help keep books tidy in the library and repair damaged ones. The right volunteer will also listen to children reading alongside a member of staff.

Times would vary according to timetables and volunteer rotas, but would be flexible to suit the volunteer.

> Those with a few hours to spare each week are needed to help out with literacy hour at the school’s resource centre.

Volunteers would help the teacher interpret books with the aim of making stories come alive for little ones.

Some items may need to be made by the volunteer.
